Can my entries be read by others?

No! Unless you specifically share your entry, it is completely private and accessible only by you. As long as you keep your password safe, your entries will never be read by anyone else. You can even lock your entries with a second password for increased security!

  1. i have just started..
if i make an entry is it secure and private to only me unless i share it? i do not have to change any setting to make it private?
and also, how do i share an entry if i choose to?

    Becca, April 25 2010   2:49 pm

  2. Entries are kept private by default. No settings or changes required!

If you want to share an entry, simply click the share icon on the pad toolbar once you have logged into your account. You can choose to share via email or a public link…

  3. So, just to get this straight, I dont need to click lock entry on the top of my screen after every entry?

    Terese, May 29 2010   11:59 pm

  4. Correct! All entries are private by default so the only person that can read your entries is you! Locking is there as a secondary precaution adding one more obstacle for a potential intruder…

  5. Hi,
My company claims that it tracks a lot of employee web usage on its laptops. If it knows that I’ve visited the Penzu website then, fine, I can live with that. But would they be able to view the entries I type into Penzu – I want my journal to be confidential ?
    Thanks

  6. All data that is transferred between your computer and our servers is encrypted using SSL—the same technology used by banks to handle online banking. So no matter which computer you use, as long as your browser is supported, your data is safe.

  7. can I share my entries with other penzu members? I’m using my journal to wright a book and I would like to get constructive criticism.

    Emma, August 9 2010   7:17 pm

  8. Unfortunately, Penzu isn’t a community so you cannot share entries with other Penzu users. You can create a link to your entry and post it on Facebook or Twitter, but everything written in your Penzu account remains private otherwise.

  9. Does Penzu Staff have access in any way (e.g. through direct access to data saved in servers) to the content I save in my journal?

There are some things that are very private to me and I wouldn’t like if staff could be browsing through the saved content to have fun. This is not that I distrust the staff, it is just that I would feel more confident to use Penzu if I was assured that my private posts are really not being read by absolutely anyone.

    Marc, September 18 2010   11:04 am

  10. The best way to secure your entries is to encrypt them with a Penzu Pro account. Encrypted entries can’t be read by anyone, including Penzu Staff. So for extremely private entries, we recommend you use the encryption lock feature.

Otherwise, your entries are still very safe, and our staff are only allowed access to unencrypted entries if you:
    - have made the entry public
    - agree to let us view your entry when asked via email
    - the entry contents are impeding our system’s functionality
    - we are required to by law

  11. Hello, I just opend the account here and I really like the simple idea of this. Considering the million social networks, THIS is something I was missing.

Anyway, I wrote a test entry and “shared” it via email with my wife. Now what she gets are these links:

    View this entry online: https://penzu.com/pad?s=8b4e1971c25c

    Comment on this entry: https://penzu.com/pad?s=8b4e1971c25c&uic=1

Now, my question is this: If every entry I make generates a link then isn’t every entry theoretically “readable” in the internet. Of course I believe it would for a normal person be difficult to “guess” any of these links. I am just asking hypothetically.

  12. If I lock an entry, may I create a link to it that a non registered user could access provided I had given them the entry passcode? For instance my therapist or priest?

    Meg, November 6 2010   1:01 am

  13. Not at the moment, no, but we hope to add this feature down the road…

  14. Email retrieval of forgotten passwords seems like an easy way for others to get in to my journal if they have access to my email account. Is there another security option I’m missing? Security questions or something comparable? The email retrieval of passwords doesn’t seem safe.

    John Smith, December 5 2010   8:35 pm

  15. Thanks for writing, John.

If someone gets a hold of your email account, you’ll be in a lot of trouble either way. They could get a lot of sensitive information and passwords that could be even more compromising. You also have the option of locking your journal so that if someone does get into your account, they’ll need another password to unlock your entries. We’re always working hard to improve our security, so we appreciate the idea.

  16. I just paid and started my journal and it said I entered too many words. Then they all disappeared except for the first sentence. There is nothing on the website about a word limit per entry. Please let me know if this is the policy. I will need to request a refund if it is.
    Thanks!

    Elizabeth, December 18 2010   2:20 am

  17. We have no limit on words for typing in the body of the entry. But titles of the entry are limited to 255 characters!

  18. How can I view other people’s diary entries if I want to?

    Bezalia, January 7 2011   8:05 pm

  19. Unfortunately you can’t! Penzu is completely private and your entries can only be read by others if you share them individually…

    Penzu Support, January 8 2011   3:25 am

  20. Is there any way I can accidently share an entry? If it’s just a 1 touch operation, I get nervous…..like sending texts/emails before I mean to.

    bonnie, January 14 2011   3:40 am

  21. Nope! Sharing requires many steps!

    Penzu Support, January 14 2011   4:02 am

  22. What does Penzu do with the entries of the deceased? Are they kept on the servers indefinitely? Released to the family? Destroyed forever? I probably won’t die anytime soon, but I would like to know what would happen.

    Caleb, July 7 2011   7:40 pm

  23. If I die, what happens to my journal?

    Caleb, July 12 2011   7:01 am

  24. Hi Penzu Support, I am researching different journaling sites and I am thinking strongly of going with Penzu but I notice there are sites that have the option to publish personal journals into books with different cover designs such as hardcover etc and the book can be mailed. Does Penzu offer this option to print journals into a book or would I have to get it printed by a local printing company or the web? God bless!

  25. I just upgraded to Penzu Pro, and clicked “like” for facebook.
i was alarmed to see that on my FB profile, it gave a link with my “liking Penzu”
that went straight to my journal! Now i know i have a password and my journal is locked but what about while i am writing in my journal or reading it, and it is unlocked? I don’t want someone who clicks on the FB link to be able to read my journal!!!!!!!

  26. Trying to share an entry via email. I entered the email address but no luck. What am I doing wrong?

    Jenn Cofer, October 26 2011   2:40 pm

  27. i am new to penzu. i have tried to lock my journal and then the individual entries.

i have repeated signed-in/out to check whether the individual journal lock and individual journal entry lock is working! its not, i can access them with entering the additional password…

or perhaps the locking by password is only functional when i try to access the journal or entry by mail??

please clarify.. my entries are very personal for me..

    thanks

  28. Is it possible to make a journal open for all to see if desired?

    Cassandra Kellogg, November 6 2011   7:12 am

  29. I’m wanting to set up a classroom discussion via a journal entries where everybody can see each other’s comments on a question.

I thought I read somewhere about a travel journal that is shared with fellow travelers was part of your marketing material.

  30. Can I offer clients Penzu through a link on my website? If I am asked to coach the client, how can I access their file- with their permission, of course?

    Alan, December 23 2011   3:02 pm

  31. Can I offer Penzu pro to my clients on a link on my website and coach them from it, with their permission?

  33. Penzu Classroom would be perfect for this! http://penzu.com/classroom

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:43 am

  34. Not at the moment, but you can use Penzu Classroom here: http://penzu.com/classroom

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:44 am

  35. Not possible! Penzu is private, so your journal is only viewable by you…

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:51 am

  36. Locking should work, but you must re-lock entries or journals before you log out!

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:56 am

  37. Nothing! Just make sure you have the right email address and the recipient checks their spam folder…

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:57 am

  38. It went right to your journal because you were still logged in! That link would not lead anyone to your journal at all… it’s always private!

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   4:58 am

  39. We don’t have this option at the moment, but hope to add it down the road…

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   5:08 am

  40. Great question, and something we’re looking into…

    Penzu Support, December 29 2011   5:17 am

  41. Great question Adam! Entries shared via Email, which have links in them, can only be viewed if the recipient doesn’t have a Penzu account. So if it is shared with an address that isn’t in our system, those entry links are viewable by anyone who has access to them.
